Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell

SYNOPSIS: In this stunning new book, Malcolm Gladwell takes us on an intellectual journey through the world of “outliers”–the best and the brightest, the most famous and the most successful. He asks the question: what makes high-achievers different?

His answer is that we pay too much attention to what successful people are like, and too little attention to where they are from: that is, their culture, their family, their generation, and the idiosyncratic experiences of their upbringing. Along the way he explains the secrets of software billionaires, what it takes to be a great soccer player, why Asians are good at math, and what made the Beatles the greatest rock band.

MY THOUGHTS: I picked up Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell after hearing many great reviews about the book. It’s not normally a type of book I would pick up for leisure reading but I did thoroughly enjoy it. With my curious personality, I whipped through chapter after chapter on topics I was fascinated about, in particular, what the Beatles and Bill Gates have in common, why successful hockey players are generally born around the same months and what the birth places of pilots have to anything to do with planet crashes. On some of the other chapters, I found myself trying to slog through to the end. All in all, I do think Outliers is a great book explaining that success is not only achieved by just skills / talent, it’s also about the circumstances given to the individual. Let me know if you find this book as interesting as I did!
