Such a Fun Age By Kiley Reid

SYNOPSIS: In the midst of a family crisis one late evening, white blogger Alix Chamberlain calls her African American babysitter, Emira, asking her to take toddler Briar to the local market for distraction. There, the security guard accuses Emira of kidnapping Briar, and Alix’s efforts to right the situation turn out to be good intentions selfishly mismanaged.

MY THOUGHTS: This was one of the book picks I selected for the “Books I’m reading to Educate Myself & to Help Support the Black Community” blog post I published around a month ago. If you want to support black authors and you have no idea where to start, I recommend starting with this one. While this book is a light and fun read, it also tackles tough topics such as racial inequality, class and privilege. The story is told from 2 perspectives; alternating between Emira (a black babysitter) and Alix Chamberlain (a white influencer with 2 young children) every other chapter. The author, Kiley Reid does not shy away from the tough topics so don’t let the pretty book cover fool you! There were a few parts in the book where I found myself cringing and really frustrated towards the characters but at the same time, I didn’t want to put this book down. At times I did wish that there were more emotions coming from both the 2 main characters though. All in all, Such a fun Age is a really easy but important read.

Overall rating: 4.5/5
