A few months back, Stella (@foodieyu) took me to La Carnita because of 2 simple reasons: 1. she loves the cocktails and tacos here and 2. I’ve never been ever since their crazy buzz. And so, we both ended up here on a Sunday night!

La Carnita (@la_carnita) located on College Park is known for their celebration of street art and street food! The first thing I noticed when I walked into the eatery was definitely the underground feel to it with all the graffitis on the wall and wooden furniture.

DSC_0545 Despite the fact that it was a Sunday night, this place was still busy. The service here was great, our waiter had no problem recommending cocktails and specials. Our foods arrived one after another. Though the only thing that bothered me a little is that this place isn’t exactly spacious. So you can literally hear the conversations going on around you.

DSC_0546 Tortilla Chips ($6.50)

  • with ancho chili powder & one side
  • Sides: Guacamole, Sikil Pak, Mezcal Chipotle Pate
  • These tortilla chips aren’t your average ones because they’re lightly sprinkled with chili powder giving it a spicy kick
  • worth the rave

For Dulce, we ordered the infamous Paletas ($4.00).

The tacos here are amazing! My favourite were definitely the In COD we trust. A bit salty with lightly battered pieces of cod and a hint of lime and cilantro. My two most favourite things! My second most favourite taco is the special of the night. The pulled pork and a pineapple is a great combination and pairing. Love the saltiness and sweetness together. The paletas were both really creamy and light. Perfect palette cleanser =)

Whenever I’m in the Annex area, I either go straight to Sushi Couture (see my post here) when I’m craving for some fresh-quality-affordable sushi or I head straight to Guu Sake Bar when I feel like Guu-ing it up. I rarely rarely look around to see what the other restaurants in the Annex has to offer. And so on a random Sunday morning, someone had tweeted me and suggested Insomnia Cafe (@insomniacafe) in the Annex … and well guess what? I ended up here for dinner the same day.

I enjoyed most of the appetizers that evening especially the mussels, crab cakes and poutine. The crab cakes weren’t entirely filled with crab meat but they were super tasty and a tad spicy. The poutine had great chunks of cheese curds and infused with lots of bacon pieces and hot gravy smothered over the fries. The highlight of the meal were the mussels! The light garlic white wine cream sauce in the mussels were very comforting. The mussels + sauce really did it for me. I even finished the remaining sauce by dipping bread into it!

Service was awesome! Our waitress was very attentive and made sure ALL our appetizers arrived at once. She made sure we constantly had clean plates. Overall it was definitely an epic and memorable meal with food in all corners of our table =D

Insomnia on Urbanspoon

On the very last day of my weekend trip to New York City,  I dragged my cousins with me to line up at Shake Shack (@shakeshack) first thing in the morning. Although they seemed to hate me during the wait (lol) , it was all worth it in the end when our food came! :D Thankfully our hotel was very close to this particular location at the Theatre District on 8th avenue & 44th street, so it wasn’t THAT long of a wait.

DSC_0083

This location opens daily from 11am to Midnight. Many people have said there’s always a huge line so we arrived 20 mins prior to opening. Once the door opens, there’s 2 separate lines: 1 is for ordering  cold foods (shakes or ice creams) – for people that are planning to grab something quick and the other line is for ordering everything else!

DSC_0090

After you order and pay, they give you a little buzzer – shortly after 10 minutes, our food was ready. Also, there are no combos at Shake Shack, so if you want fries and a drink with your burger then you have to order it separately.

Their burgers are 100% all natural Angus beef. No hormones and no antibiotics ever. Their proprietary Shack blend is freshly ground. All burgers are cooked medium unless otherwise requested.

Shroom Burger ($4.90 – vegetarian)

  • Crisp-fried portobello mushroom filled with with melted muenster and cheddar cheeses, topped with lettuce, tomato and Shacksauce

DSC_0096

ShackBurger ($4.60 – single)

  • Cheeseburger topped with lettuce, tomato, and ShackSauce
  • I also ordered the Shackburger along with my cousin
  • It was the perfect size, a juicy beef patty not overbearing or too gluttonous
  • Despite the amount of orders for burgers going into their kitchen, each of our burgers were made with care

DSC_0103

Hamburger ($3,60 – single)

  • with lettuce, tomato and onions

DSC_0099

SmokeShack ($6.25 – Single)

  • Cheeseburger topped with Niman Ranch all-natural applewood smoked bacon, chopped cherry pepper and ShackSauce

DSC_0101

Cheese Fries ($3.70)

  • Crinkle cut Yukon potatoes. 100 % free of artificial trans fats
  • Topped with their special blend of cheddar and American cheese sauce
  • I love poutines but I don’t usually like cheese fries because I personally find them too heavy for my liking. However, these were unexpectedly light without being too “gunky”
  • These fries must be eaten right away or they get soggy really quickly

DSC_0098

Of course Shake Shack will be on my radar next time I visit New York! I totally understand the hype about this place and it probably shows why there’s still a hype now even when this Shack Shack “buzz” happened years back. When you guys do check out this place, please be prepared to wait in line (not for too long) unless you arrive when they open!

We ordered extra burgers for our trip back home! :D

Shake Shack on Urbanspoon

A few months ago, I visited Sukho Thai (Parliament location) (@Sukhothaifood) and dragged a few foodies along with me: Carmen (@Carmenhungry), Andrew (@_aneb) and Andrea! This location is currently closed as they’re focusing on their newly opened location on Wellington. Regardless of where they move around Toronto, this eatery is legit serving more than just your average pad thai!

DSC_0573

The Parliament location was narrow and not exactly spacious. Everything on the menu looked quite affordable. The only complaint I have was that their service was quite slow.

DSC_0575

Thai Iced Tea ($4.00)

  • Ever since I tried a Thai Iced Tea at Khao San Road, I was in love with it. So this was an obvious choice for me.
  • I would compare the taste of this thai iced tea to a HK style milk tea but a sweeter version. This drink is uber good and super refreshing

DSC_0579

Sukhothai Pad Thai ($11.25)

  • Made with peanuts, more herbs and a small-town, northern-style, authentic-Thai twist
  • Everything on the menu looked really good but I love my Pad Thai’s so I opted for their signature Sukhothai Pad Thai verses their pad thai. The difference between their signature and their regular pad thai, according to their website is the chef’s signature touch. So I’m assuming its the sauce
  • But whatever the touch is, it’s legit. It was really tasty, sweet, LOVED the ciltrano kick to it. No Ketchup.

DSC_0583

Khao Soi ($10.25)

  • Yellow noodles in curry gravy with green onions, coriander and a light, crispy noodle topping.  Choice of chicken or beef.
  • This is among one of the popular choices. Something I have to go back to the Wellington location to check out.

DSC_0588

Tom Yum King ($8.75)

  • Hot and sour shrimp soup with Galangal, lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves, coriander, onions and tomatoes. Served with rice

DSC_0591

Red Curry with Beef <Gaeng Phed> ($8.75)

  • Red Curry with squash, kaffir lime leaves, basil leaves, red and green pepers and coconut milk.  Choice of chicken, beef or tofu and served with rice.
  • Man, sometimes I just wish I had higher tolerance for spicy foods… Anyways Carmen ordered this and loved it. Thai cuisines use coconut in their curry so this was a win for her!

DSC_0593

As I mentioned earlier, Sukho Thai in my opinion is authentic as it gets in terms of Thai cuisine. I can always resort to this place whenever I’m craving for some authentic Thai Iced Tea and signature pad thai. Lastly, depending on where you guys are located, the Wellington Location is a lot more convenient for me so hopefully I’ll be checking them out soon!

Cheers =D
